November 2014 - Self-Made Entrepreneur Ria Thomas Develops Bedroom Project into Successful High Street Shop
Siop Ria is a great story of a self-made entrepreneur developing a bedroom project into a successful business.
Welsh born Ria Thomas graduated from Manchester Metropolitan in 2002 with a first class degree in Contemporary Crafts. Upon returning home to her parents' house in Bala, North Wales, she found herself unable to find a graduate job in a bleak economic climate. Ria had a passion for making things and didn't want to lose sight of her dream so she started designing handmade greetings cards from the comfort of her bedroom.
Ria's talent was obvious and these cards were hugely popular among friends and family. She supplied local shopkeepers who found that her cards would fly off the shelf. Demand was growing. Word spread and soon everyone wanted her crafts. This self-run business grew enough for Ria to move out of her bedroom and open a shop on Bala high street.
In her store, Siop Ria, she sells a variety of handmade arts and crafts alongside other unique items she has discovered from around the world. Her shop has its own studio allowing her to give full reign to her creative nature and make a variety of bespoke cards, jewellery and personal gifts.
In 2013 Siop Ria expanded even further, this time into the online market. There are a number of obstacles to overcome in becoming an online retailer. With online card fraud totalling ??110 million in the first six months of 2014 alone*, it is more important than ever for retailers to exercise vigilance when accepting payments.
Ria set up a merchant account with payment processor Nochex who dealt with the tricky business of handling transactions allowing Ria to focus on running her shop. Nochex set Ria up with an account within a couple of days enabling her to start accepting payments securely in no time. A year on and business is booming. Siop Ria is a bustling part of Bala high street and the online store is thriving.

November 2014 - Sunderland Business: Sexy Bars UK finds Success as Bespoke Gift Idea
Clare Allen's Sexy Bars UK is a Sunderland success story that sell tailor made bars for home use. Buying a home bar is a growing trend among homeowners looking to bring the fun of the pub into the comfort of their home.
In the early days, word of mouth was a key catalyst to their success and Clare quickly built a reputation for quality design and good service. Buyers love throwing parties to show off their new bars to envious friends who would go on to buy a Sexy Bar for themselves.
Having built a reputation for good quality in the North East, Clare decided to take on the daunting task of selling online. In 2013 Sexy Bars opened an online merchant account with payment processor Nochex enabling them to trade online. A year later Clare has more orders than she can shake a stick at; business is booming.
Sexy Bars has grown into a thriving online retailer. Home bars have turned out to be a hugely popular gift idea amongst couples. Boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives love giving bars as gifts for their other halves. Buying a bar for a spouse is a cheeky way of getting something both partners can enjoy.
With Christmas coming up we spoke to Sexy Bars UK owner Clare as she approaches her busiest time of the year.
"Christmas is always a busy time for Sexy Bars, we deliver bars right up to Christmas Eve. The great thing for nearby customers is there is also the option of local collection. We're actually working on a beautiful bespoke model for a local man this week. It's a very stylish bar called the 'Lit Bar' with blue lighting. We are making it larger than the normal model to suit his newly completed games room. The bar is always the icing on the cake and completes our customer's home projects, it's a delight to see our bars in situ, some customers send us a picture of themselves enjoying their bar - lucky them!
We have had a range of customers over the years since 2007 when we started trading in a tiny workshop in High Street East, from Premiership footballers, to customers with holiday homes, one family bought a bar for their Washington home and another for their holiday pad in Lanzarote, we well wrapped that bar alright! It arrived safe and sound.

October 2014 - Nochex Announce PCI DSS Level 1 Version 3.0 Certification
Nochex, the UKs leading independent online payment service provider with thousands of trading merchants, is proud to announce it is among the first payment methods in the UK to fully comply with new rules regulating the security of online card payments. The new standards are obligatory from 2015 but Nochex has ensured it remains one step ahead of the competition by certifying early.
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Level 1 is a compulsory standard for leading banks and financial institutions worldwide including Nochex. It was set up to help businesses process card payments securely and reduce card fraud by protecting sensitive card holder information. Any organisation that handles, stores or transmits card payments or cardholder information must meet these standards. Leading firms such as Nochex are assessed annually to ensure they have correctly applied this stringent set of standards to their cardholder environment.
Every three years the standard is updated to make sure it stays abreast of the latest security requirements. The most recent update (version 3.0) was released in November 2013 and becomes mandatory in 2015. Nochex made the decision to become compliant early to ensure it maintains the highest levels of security for its merchant account customers and consumers. In doing so Nochex has become one of the first UK based organisations to achieve compliance.
Nochex Chief Executive Officer, Martin Greenbank says "Nochex is delighted to have passed its assessment. Security is of paramount importance to a payment service like ours which is why we were so keen to be assessed against the most up to date version of the standard. It was a demanding exercise but the last thing we want is for our customers to be at risk. Being among the first really is the icing on the cake. We strive to be the very best at everything we do and obviously security is no exception."
As internet shopping grows more popular, so, regrettably, does internet fraud grow more common. According to figures released by Financial Fraud Action UK*, in the first six months of 2014 alone £110m was lost to credit card fraud in the UK. This emphasises how vital it is for a trusted payment method like Nochex to continue to invest in security.
Nochex Chief Technical Officer, Andrew Baiden adds "Criminals are getting more sophisticated and each day seems to bring a different challenge. Card security is about being pro-active. You have to adapt all the time to stay secure, which is why we completed our assessment earlier than needed. Protecting our customers' data is crucial to us. We don't just complete the assessment and then rest for the next 12 months; security is a 24/7 job and we are continually working to improve to ensure that we can help stop fraud before it happens."
Nochex is a UK-based provider of online payment solutions that is trusted by businesses and consumers around the world to process their payments. Small and medium-sized enterprises use the Nochex payment solution to simplify how they accept and settle online credit and debit card payments. The Nochex payment service helps businesses start trading quickly and safely. Being an independent provider has allowed the company to support tens of thousands of merchants around the UK across a wide range of industries.
